Team Profile
Bowling Green State University in Ohio exemplifies competitive excellence and tradition through its athletic teams, known as the Falcons, since 1914. Home to the 1984 NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey National Champions, their thrilling overtime victory against Minnesota-Duluth remains the longest championship game in college hockey history, enhancing their national reputation. Legendary coaches like Ron Mason and Jerry York fostered a culture of hockey dominance, including seven CCHA titles and multiple Frozen Four appearances. The program has produced Olympic medalists such as Ken Morrow and Mark Wells, gold medalists from the "Miracle on Ice" 1980 team, alongside Hobey Baker Award winners George McPhee and Brian Holzinger. Basketball thrives with the women’s program reaching a Sweet Sixteen in 2007 after six consecutive MAC regular season championships, establishing national prominence. Football has won a dozen conference championships, including a historic undefeated team in 1959, while fierce rivalries like the Battle of I-75 with Toledo invigorate fan passion. Freddie and Frieda Falcon mascots, supported by the spirited SICSIC spirit crew, lead enthusiastic fans in state-of-the-art venues. The Falcons’ rugby program won the USA Rugby D1-AA National Championship in 2018, underpinning their broad competitiveness. Bowling Green athletics prioritize resilience, unity, and championship pursuit throughout every contest and community engagement.
