The University of California, Berkeley competes in NCAA Division I from Berkeley, California. Most Golden Bears teams joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2024, while beach volleyball, men's gymnastics, men's rowing and water polo compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The university sponsors 30 varsity programs. In the first ACC season, 2024-25, men's swimming and diving and women's gymnastics both won conference championships.
Cal's NCAA team titles span many sports:
Rugby, which competes outside the NCAA championship structure, won its 34th national title in 2025.
Football plays at California Memorial Stadium, which opened in 1923. Haas Pavilion, which opened in 1999 on the site of Harmon Gym (built in 1933) and seats 11,877, is home to basketball. Baseball plays at Evans Diamond at Stu Gordon Stadium, a 2,500-seat park that has been the Bears' home since 1933. Swimming, diving and water polo use the Spieker Aquatics Complex, and both rowing programs train out of the T. Gary Rogers Rowing Center.
Stanford is the rival that matters most. The football Big Game sends the Stanford Axe to the winner; Cal won it in 2024, and Stanford took it back with a 31-10 win in the 128th meeting in November 2025. Oski the Bear is the mascot, and the student-run University of California Marching Band, known as the Cal Band, plays at football games, with a smaller Straw Hat Band covering basketball.
