Dartmouth College competes in NCAA Division I as a member of the Ivy League, with its teams based in Hanover, New Hampshire. Football has won 22 Ivy League titles, outright or shared, most recently in 2023 and 2024. The late Buddy Teevens had a hand in six of them, one as the starting quarterback in 1978 and five more across two stints as head coach. Skiing has won three NCAA team championships, in 1958, 1976 (shared with Colorado) and 2007.
According to the school, Dartmouth has sent athletes to every Winter Olympics since the first, in 1924, and to every Summer Games since 1976. Former Big Green hockey players Gretchen Ulion and Sarah Tueting won gold with the U.S. women's team at Nagano in 1998, beating Canada 3-1 in the final. Kristin Luckenbill won soccer gold with the United States at Athens in 2004, and Ariana Ramsey helped the U.S. win its first women's rugby sevens medal, a bronze, at Paris 2024. At Milan Cortina 2026, Tanguy Nef won gold for Switzerland in the men's team combined, and Laura Stacey, a gold medalist in 2022, took silver with Canada in women's hockey. Rosie Brennan and Lauren Jortberg skied cross-country for the United States at the same Games.
Football plays at Buddy Teevens Stadium at Memorial Field, dedicated in October 2024 in honor of the longtime coach. Both hockey teams play at Thompson Arena, while basketball and volleyball share Leede Arena. Baseball plays at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park, the rowing teams train from the Friends of Dartmouth Rowing Boathouse, and the alpine skiers train at the Dartmouth Skiway in nearby Lyme.
The school color has a sporting origin. In 1866, a group of Amherst students came to Hanover to teach Dartmouth men the game of baseball. Stung by the loss and by Amherst's purple and white, a Dartmouth catcher named Ketcham pushed for a color of their own, and that fall the senior class met in Dartmouth Hall and voted for green, a pine shade he chose with the hills around Hanover in mind.
