Team Profile
The Maine Black Bears proudly represent the University of Maine in Orono with deep-rooted tradition and a commitment to excellence. Competing in 17 sports within the America East Conference, Hockey East, and Coastal Athletic Association, the Black Bears are renowned for their hockey dynasty, having won two NCAA national championships (1993, 1999) and made eleven Frozen Four appearances. Their legendary 42-1-2 season in 1992-93 is a hallmark of perseverance and skill led by freshman phenom Paul Kariya, the first freshman to win the Hobey Baker Award with 100 points in 39 games. Kariya’s Olympic silver at the 1994 Winter Games and subsequent gold in 2002 highlight Maine’s legacy of Olympic excellence. Beyond hockey, Maine has produced numerous NHL stars including Jimmy Howard, Dustin Penner, and Garth Snow; NFL standouts like linebacker Lofa Tatupu and fullback Patrick Ricard; and boasts seven College World Series appearances in baseball, alongside multiple CAA football championships. Over 100 conference championships reflect the relentless spirit of northern Maine. The Black Bears continue advancing a legacy of competitive excellence marked by tradition, community pride, and Olympic achievement.
