Team Profile
The Montana Grizzlies and Lady Griz represent the spirit and pride of Big Sky Country at the University of Montana in Missoula. Since adopting the Grizzlies nickname in 1923, Montana has forged a storied athletics legacy built on tradition, championship excellence, and rugged determination reflective of the state’s natural heritage. Montana football stands as one of the most dominant programs in FCS history, boasting two national championships in 1995 and 2001 and a record-setting 17 consecutive postseason appearances—the longest "Streak" in FCS. The electric atmosphere at Washington-Grizzly Stadium, with its 25,217-seat capacity amid breathtaking mountain views, serves as a fortress that intimidates opponents and unites passionate fans. Legendary rivalries like the “Brawl of the Wild” against Montana State and fierce battles with Idaho and Eastern Washington ignite statewide dedication. The Lady Griz basketball program, under long-time coach Robin Selvig, has compiled a remarkable 757-252 record with 22 regular season conference titles and NCAA tournament appearances, making it one of the elite women’s programs nationally. Their maroon and silver colors honor Montana’s mining roots, and mascot Monte, twice named Capital One Mascot of the Year, exemplifies their fighting spirit. The Grizzlies embody championship tradition, community pride, and the raw power of Big Sky Country.
