Team Profile
The Montana State Bobcats carry the enduring pride of Bozeman and Big Sky Country, representing Montana State University with grit and determination. Since 1893, the Bobcats have crafted an impressive athletics tradition highlighted by historic basketball innovation and football dominance. The "Golden Bobcats" of the late 1920s revolutionized basketball under pioneer coach Ott Romney, perfecting "racehorse basketball" and producing legends like Cat Thompson and John "Brick" Breeden. Their 1928-29 team earned a retroactive national championship, illustrating Montana grit at its finest. Montana State football is nationally renowned for its unique accomplishment of winning national titles in three classifications: NAIA (1956), NCAA Division II (1976), and NCAA Division I-AA (1984), complemented by 19 conference football titles. The skiing program boasts 13 national champions and has hosted six NCAA National Championships, while the rodeo team is steeped in tradition with eight national team titles and 32 individual championships. Worthington Arena, with roaring crowds, and Bobcat Stadium, framed by scenic Gallatin Valley, are symbols of the Bobcat spirit. With a fierce rivalry with Montana centered on the storied “Brawl of the Wild,” Montana State epitomizes enduring athletic excellence and championship ambition across generations.
