Morgan State University in Baltimore carries over 125 years of proud HBCU athletic heritage as the Bears and Lady Bears. Their legacy is marked by a tradition of championship excellence across 13 varsity sports. The football program garnered 23 conference championships, including 14 CIAA titles under legendary coach Edward P. Hurt, whose teams executed an unprecedented 54-game winning streak from 1931 to 1938. The men’s basketball team won the 1974 NCAA Division II National Championship and also hosted one of the South’s first interracial games in 1952, breaking social barriers alongside sporting achievements. Morgan State’s storied “Flying Four” relay team dominated track competitions with 13 national championships from 1951 to 1955, including Olympic bronze medalist Josh Culbreath. In 2023, Morgan State revived wrestling under the leadership of Olympic gold medalist Kenny Monday, becoming the first HBCU in EIWA history. The program’s pedigree extends to producing four Pro Football Hall of Famers, exemplifying its commitment to elite athlete development.
