Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia, represents a dynamic force of HBCU championship excellence through the Spartans. Since transitioning to Division I in 1997, the Spartans have crafted a competitive legacy spanning 14 varsity sports marked by historic moments. The men’s basketball program gained national attention with a legendary 2012 NCAA Tournament upset, knocking off #2 seed Missouri 86-84 as only the fifth 15-seed to advance—a defining moment in Spartan history. Continuing their dominance, the basketball program has secured four MEAC tournament championships and multiple NCAA appearances. The women’s basketball team has displayed remarkable ascendancy by winning three consecutive MEAC titles from 2023 to 2025, the first program since 2010-2014 to achieve this feat. Norfolk State’s men's outdoor track and field team captured back-to-back NCAA Division II national championships in 1973 and 1974, while the baseball team earned its inaugural NCAA tournament berth in 2021. Dick Price Stadium and other state-of-the-art facilities energize fans where green and gold pride soars.
