North Carolina Central University in Durham proudly carries a long legacy of HBCU excellence through the Eagles and Lady Eagles. In the Research Triangle, these warriors have combined academic achievement with athletic prowess to establish a vibrant championship culture. Across 14 varsity sports, the Eagles have amassed remarkable successes; most notably, the men’s basketball team won the 1989 NCAA Division II National Championship while claiming multiple CIAA and MEAC titles, including four consecutive MEAC tournament championships in 2014, 2017, 2018, and 2019. Football has a distinguished history dominated by conference championships in both CIAA and MEAC eras, with recent MEAC titles in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2022. Track and field claimed the 1972 NAIA National Championship, adding to the program’s storied achievements. The athletics department supports a broad range of competitive sports blending tradition, talent, and determination. O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium and McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium provide spirited home venues.
