Team Profile
The Saint Joseph's Hawks embody the spirit and pride of Philadelphia, representing Saint Joseph's University since 1929. Known affectionately as "The Hawk," the program has developed one of college athletics' most passionate and respected legacies, competing fiercely in the Atlantic 10 Conference and the historic Philadelphia Big 5. The Hawks basketball program is renowned for its consistency and competitiveness, ranking 33rd all-time with over 1,400 wins and claiming 21 NCAA Tournament appearances. Among their most celebrated achievements is the unforgettable 2003-04 season when the team completed a perfect regular season with a 27-0 record, showcasing relentless determination and elite skill. Saint Joseph’s has also secured seven Atlantic 10 titles, underscoring its position as a long-standing basketball powerhouse.
Beyond basketball, the Hawks have made their mark on the Olympic stage with outstanding athletes such as basketball legend Mike Bantom, who competed in Munich 1972, rowing silver medalist Teresa Zarzecki Bell from the 1996 Games, and soccer coach Tim Mulqueen, who represented his sport in Beijing 2008. The Hawks' field hockey program has risen to national prominence, reaching the 2024 NCAA Championship game – marking the first-ever national title game appearance in the school's history in any sport.
Central to Saint Joseph’s identity is the iconic chant, "The Hawk Will Never Die!"—hailed by Sports Illustrated as one of the most defiant cheers in college sports—reflecting their unyielding Philadelphia grit and the fierce rivalry known as the Holy War with Villanova. Saint Joseph’s continues to soar with pride, tradition, and an undying competitive spirit, graduating champions in athletics and life alike.
