The San José State Spartans embody Silicon Valley’s innovation and competitive spirit at San José State University. With a legacy dating back to 1890, the Spartans have earned 10 NCAA Division I team championships and 50 individual NCAA champions. Their golden era saw three consecutive women’s golf national titles and a men's golf championship in 1948, with boxing dominance evident in three straight NCAA titles in the late 1950s. The track program, known as “Speed City,” produced Olympic legends Tommie Smith and John Carlos, whose iconic 1968 Olympic protest redefined sports history, alongside record-setting Lee Evans. The judo program is unmatched, with 52 men’s and 26 women’s NCJA national championships and Olympians like Mike Swain and Marti Malloy. Located at the heart of Silicon Valley, the program has produced NFL coaching legends Bill Walsh and Dick Vermeil, and baseball star Jeff Garcia.
