Team Profile
The Youngstown State Penguins uniquely represent Youngstown State University with pride as the nation’s only college athletics program to adopt the Penguin mascot. Based in Youngstown, Ohio, the Penguins have crafted a distinguished legacy across multiple sports while competing in the Horizon League and Missouri Valley Football Conference. The football program is a national powerhouse in the FCS division, capturing four national championships (1991, 1993, 1994, 1997) under legendary coach Jim Tressel, ranking third all-time behind North Dakota State and Georgia Southern. Stambaugh Stadium, known as the “Ice Castle,” provides an intimidating venue where the Penguins have sent over 20 athletes to the NFL, including notable stars Jeff Wilkins, Ron Jaworski, and Paul McFadden, with 11 playoff appearances since 1978. Beyond football, Youngstown State captured the 2025 NCAA Bowling Championship in a landmark achievement. The women’s basketball team has made three NCAA Tournaments with highlights including a 1998 upset over Memphis. The track and field teams dominate Horizon League competition with multiple triple crowns, and the baseball program has delivered thrilling NCAA Tournament appearances. Inventors of the penalty flag in 1941, the Penguins continue to build championship traditions marked by passion and tenacity unique to their nickname and community.
