The SEC was founded on December 8, 1932, when thirteen Southern Conference schools met at the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville and wrote their own charter. Ten of those founders remain members today. Nearly a century later the league spans sixteen universities across twelve states and sponsors 22 sports.
Football built the reputation. The SEC staged the first conference championship game in Division I history in 1992 and has claimed national titles at a rate no other league approaches. Alabama alone accounts for more than a dozen. Five member schools play in stadiums that seat over 100,000.

Georgia opened the modern era with a College World Series title in 1990, and LSU, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Florida, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Oklahoma have all followed.
