The Southeastern Conference was born in December 1932, when 13 members of the Southern Conference located west and south of the Appalachian Mountains met in Knoxville, Tennessee, and voted to form a league of their own. The meeting took place at the Farragut Hotel on Gay Street, and the new conference was formally announced at the city's Andrew Johnson Hotel. Play began in 1933.
The charter members were Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Sewanee, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. Dr. Frank L. McVey of Kentucky served as the first president, and Nathan Dougherty, a former Tennessee athletics chairman, was the first secretary. Sewanee departed in 1940, Georgia Tech in 1964 and Tulane in 1966, while Arkansas and South Carolina joined in the early 1990s.
The conference moved its headquarters to Birmingham, Alabama, in 1948. One of its early decisions was lifting a radio ban the Southern Conference had imposed, allowing fans across the South to hear football games on the air.
The SEC also changed college football itself. In 1992 it staged the sport's first conference championship game, as Alabama and Florida met at Legion Field in Birmingham, beginning a tradition that has become one of the marquee dates on the college football calendar.
