Preferred Walk-On (PWO)

A recruit who is guaranteed a roster spot by the coaching staff but doesn't receive an athletic scholarship. PWOs are often borderline scholarship-level players who choose a specific program for other reasons — academics, proximity to home, or NIL opportunities. In the NIL era, some PWOs earn more through NIL deals than their scholarship would have been worth.
