Team Profile
Delaware State University in Dover embraces a legacy of championship pride and HBCU athletics excellence as the Hornets. Since joining the MEAC in 1970, the Hornets have forged a tradition across 18 varsity sports marked by competitive success and historic milestones. The football program boasts nine MEAC championships, highlighted by a record-setting 2007 season featuring 10 wins, the program’s first FCS playoff appearance, and recognition as Division I Black College National Champions. Men’s basketball claimed the 2005 MEAC title and NCAA berth, while women’s basketball secured the 2006 MEAC championship. Their bowling program dominates collegiate bowling, capturing three MEAC titles and reaching the 2009 NCAA Final Four. Continuing to break ground, Delaware State launched the first women’s wrestling program at an HBCU in 2024, reflecting an ongoing commitment to pioneering growth in athletics. Alumni Stadium proudly hosts spirited fans amid green and gold banners symbolizing Hornet pride.
