The James Madison Dukes of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, wear purple and gold with pride as a national force in athletics. Competing in NCAA Division I Sun Belt Conference, the Dukes boast five NCAA national championships, placing them third among Virginia universities. Their football program is a national powerhouse with two FCS National Championships (2004, 2016), featuring landmark victories and producing NFL stars such as Charles Haley, the only player with five Super Bowl rings. The women’s lacrosse team captured the 2018 NCAA Championship, displaying determination with a thrilling last-minute victory. Field hockey claimed the 1994 national title in double overtime, while women’s basketball ranks among the elite with over 1,000 wins in program history. Olympic excellence remains integral, highlighted by 1984 field hockey Olympian Christy Morgan and 2006 baseball National Player of the Year Kellen Kulbacki.
