Team Profile
The Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers embody a rich basketball heritage, a legacy of legendary coaching, and the resilient spirit of their mountain home in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The university's championship soul was forged in 1962, when the men's basketball team climbed to the top of the small-college world to win the NCAA National Championship, establishing a winning tradition that spans generations. That tradition was cultivated by Hall of Fame coach Jim Phelan, who guided the program for an incredible 49 seasons and built "The Mount" into a respected basketball institution. Since transitioning to Division I, the Mountaineers have become a familiar face in March Madness, earning six trips to the NCAA Tournament and securing multiple "First Four" victories. After moving to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to embrace a new challenge, the program's winning culture continues to thrive, alongside a women's basketball team with its own NCAA Tournament history and a championship-winning men's lacrosse team. The Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers are a testament to the power of tradition and toughness, a small school with a giant basketball legacy that is never afraid of the climb.
