The Northern Iowa Panthers symbolize fierce determination, tradition, and championship excellence at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Competing in NCAA Division I as members of the Missouri Valley Conference, the Panthers have a venerable legacy marked by multiple national championships and a tradition of developing Olympic champions. Mascots TC and TK Panther embody the spirit of 15 varsity sports. The wrestling program claims three national titles (1950 NCAA single division, 1975, and 1978 NCAA Division II) and has produced Olympic gold medalist William Smith and silver medalist Gerald Leeman. The softball team won AIAW Women’s College World Series championships in 1977 and 1982, while basketball programs have achieved memorable NCAA Tournament successes. Iconic facilities like the UNI-Dome and McLeod Center host energetic competitions and championship development. Northern Iowa continues to foster elite athletes who compete at Olympic trials and international competitions. The Panthers proudly wear purple and old gold as they develop champions excelling in wrestling, softball, basketball, and numerous other sports on national and global stages.
