Team Profile
The University of South Carolina Gamecocks proudly represent Southern pride, excellence, and championship perseverance in Columbia. Since adopting the fierce "Gamecocks" identity in 1900—honoring Revolutionary War hero General Thomas Sumter—the program has cultivated a legacy that resonates throughout collegiate athletics. With six NCAA team championships, the Gamecocks have firmly established themselves as one of the nation’s elite programs. A cornerstone of their success is the women’s basketball dynasty led by Hall of Fame coach Dawn Staley, which captured three NCAA national titles in 2017, 2022, and 2024, as well as six Final Four appearances. Complementing basketball, the baseball program achieved back-to-back College World Series championships in 2010 and 2011, captivating fans with unforgettable tournament runs. Women’s track and field also contributes to the tradition with the 2002 NCAA championship and a rich history of Olympic athletes, including gold medalists Aleen Bailey and Natasha Hastings. Williams-Brice Stadium is a fortress for Gamecock football, hosting over 80,000 spirited fans who create one of the most electrifying atmospheres in college sports. From spirited traditions to passionate community support, South Carolina epitomizes the fighting spirit and unyielding determination of the heart of the South, continuously striving to rise higher across all sports disciplines.
