South Dakota State’s athletics program, branded as the Jackrabbits, has established itself as a consistent contender in both football and basketball at the FCS and Summit League levels. The football program boasts sustained success with multiple playoff appearances, underpinned by strong recruiting pipelines and coaching stability. Men’s and women’s basketball have also demonstrated competitive resilience, regularly qualifying for postseason tournaments and challenging dominant conference rivals such as North Dakota State.
SDSU leverages a robust donor ecosystem and engaged alumni network concentrated in the Upper Midwest, enhancing the student-athlete ROI through NIL initiatives and sponsorships. The local economic environment of Brookings and the surrounding region supports brand visibility for athletes, especially within agriculture, manufacturing, and healthcare sectors prevalent in South Dakota. Facilities such as Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, a modern 19,000-seat venue, and Frost Arena provide strategic assets for recruiting leverage and media rights negotiations.
By integrating NIL opportunities with strong community ties and a growing media footprint in FCS football, SDSU maximizes marketability for its athletes. The institution’s efforts to expand brand partnerships and capitalize on alumni connections contribute to elevated exposure and financial benefits for student-athletes, promoting sustainable program growth and competitive positioning in the mid-major NCAA landscape.
