The Southern Utah Thunderbirds symbolize the resilience and fierce spirit of Cedar City, Utah, competing in NCAA Division I’s Western Athletic Conference and United Athletic Conference in football. Since 1961, the Thunderbirds have displayed soaring ambitions, their mythological mascot inspired by Norse legends of strength and endurance. Across 13 varsity sports, Southern Utah nurtures competitive excellence through programs like the women’s gymnastics "Flippin' Birds," who compete at elite Mountain Pacific Sports Federation levels and produce Olympic-caliber athletes. The track and field squad has supports athletes who have reached Olympic trials and international competition, while the soccer program consistently develops talent to represent their nations at the highest levels. Navigating conference transitions with determination, the Thunderbirds maintain a culture of competitiveness and athlete development. Their upcoming 2026 return to the Big Sky Conference along with archrival Utah Tech promises renewed rivalries and spirited competition. Competing from Eccles Coliseum and the America First Event Center, Southern Utah continues to build championship traditions that honor its Norse-inspired heritage while fostering Olympians and professional athletes destined to achieve greatness.
