UC Santa Barbara, in Santa Barbara, California, fields 20 varsity teams in NCAA Division I. The Gauchos compete in the Big West Conference. UCSB is the conference's oldest member and a founding one: the league began in 1969 as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association. The athletics site notes that baseball, basketball and football teams were first formed in the 1920s.
Jason Lezak, who swam at UCSB, competed in four Olympics from 2000 to 2012 and won eight medals: four gold, two silver and two bronze, according to Team USA. The UCSB Events Center opened in 1979 as a new basketball facility. It seats about 6,000 and has long been known as the Thunderdome, a nickname it had earned by 1986. Before that, students called it the ECen.
