Founded in 1969 as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association, the Big West took its current name in 1988 — partly driven by an ESPN deal placing it alongside the Big East and Big Ten on 'Big Monday' broadcasts. Commissioner Dan Butterly leads the conference. Eleven schools currently compete: Cal Poly, CSU Bakersfield, Cal State Fullerton, CSUN, Hawai'i, Long Beach State, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara. California Baptist, Utah Valley and Sacramento State join in 2026-27; UC San Diego departs for the WCC that year. Pacific identity defines the sport portfolio. The Big West's 19 sponsored sports include men's volleyball, water polo and beach volleyball — distinctive for a mid-major. Tagline: 'Only The Bold™.' UC Irvine has won four men's volleyball national titles (2007, 2009, 2012, 2013); Long Beach State has won four (1991, 2018, 2019, 2025) including the 1998 women's title led by Misty May-Treanor. Cal State Fullerton won four College World Series titles (1979, 1984, 1995, 2004) and the 1986 softball championship. Basketball's landmark moment came from former member UNLV, which routed Duke 103-73 for the 1990 national title and went undefeated in 1991 before a Final Four loss — widely regarded as one of the best college teams ever. UC San Diego won the 2024-25 regular-season crown. The conference tournament is held annually at Lee's Family Forum in Henderson, Nevada, on ESPN. UC Santa Barbara is the conference's most prolific Commissioner's Cup winner with 10 trophies and claimed the 2006 men's soccer national championship. Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara are the only surviving charter members, with Long Beach State holding continuous membership. Commissioner Butterly has been an outspoken mid-major advocate for equitable governance amid House settlement restructuring.
