Formerly the American Athletic Conference (AAC), the American Conference shortened its name on July 21, 2025, adopting the slogan 'Built To Rise' and introducing Soar the Eagle, the first brand ambassador mascot in college athletics. The conference is the legal successor to the original Big East, which split in 2013. Based in Irving, Texas, it is led by commissioner Tim Pernetti, who succeeded Mike Aresco on June 1, 2024. The American has 13 full members: UAB, Charlotte, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Memphis, North Texas, Rice, South Florida, Temple, UTSA, Tulane, Tulsa and Wichita State (basketball and Olympic sports only). Army and Navy are football-only affiliates. The American was the first conference to establish league-wide NIL minimums for student-athletes ahead of the House v. NCAA settlement, and in 2025 launched American RISE Ventures, a commercial innovation division focused on brand partnerships and athlete revenue streams. The American has produced four NCAA championship teams, four New Year's Six bowl champions, two Men's Final Four participants and six Women's Final Four teams. In 2021, Cincinnati became the first Group of Five school in the CFP; Tulane followed with a Cotton Bowl win over USC in 2022 and a second CFP bid in 2025. The annual Army-Navy game remains one of college football's most storied rivalries. Conference athletes have excelled at the highest levels. Navy QB Keenan Reynolds finished fifth in the 2015 Heisman vote and won the 2016 Sullivan Award as the nation's top amateur athlete. Memphis center James Wiseman was the No. 2 NBA Draft pick in 2020; Wichita State's Alec Bohm went No. 3 in the 2018 MLB Draft. UConn won four NCAA titles as a member — including three consecutive women's basketball championships from 2013-14 through 2015-16 — before departing for the Big East in 2020.
