The American Southwest Conference, known as the ASC, is an NCAA Division III conference whose members have been concentrated in Texas, with additional schools across the broader South over the years. The conference was formed on May 23, 1996, and began competition in the 1996 to 1997 school year.
Its founding members included McMurry University and Mississippi College, two programs that became pillars of the league in its early years. Mississippi College won 31 conference tournament championships during its 18 seasons in the ASC, and McMurry claimed 41 conference championships during its first 16 years in the league.
ASC athletes have also found success on the national stage. While competing in the conference, McMurry won NCAA Division III national championships in men's track and field in 2008 and 2012, highlighting the depth of talent that the league has produced.
Over its history the ASC has sponsored a full range of championships, including football, baseball, softball, volleyball, and men's and women's basketball, soccer, golf, tennis, cross country, and track and field.
