The Big East Conference is widely viewed as a basketball conference. But that doesn't tell the whole story of the 11-member league. The Big East sponsors 22 sports (10 for men and 20 for women) and it has enjoyed success well beyond basketball. Since taking its current shape in 2013, Big East member schools have won team NCAA championships in women's cross country, men's soccer, men's lacrosse and field hockey as well as in men's and women's basketball. Current full conference members are DePaul, UConn, Butler, Villanova, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, Creighton, Xavier, Seton Hall and St. John's. Originally formed as a basketball-centric conference in 1979, the Big East drew wide-spread attention in 1985 when Villanova, Georgetown and St. John's all reached the Final Four of the men's basketball NCAA tournament. The conference stayed mostly unchanged until 1991 when it took a major step and began sponsoring football, adding Miami as a full member and Rutgers, West Virginia, Virginia Tech and Temple as football-only members. Rutgers, West Virginia and Virginia Tech eventually became full members and Notre Dame came on board as a non-football member in 1995. A major change came in 2013 when the football and non-football schools decided to split. The non-football schools got to keep the Big East name, while the football schools formed the basis of what is now called the American Conference. The new big East got to keep logos, basketball records and the rights to the annual Big East men's basketball tournament at Madison Square Garden. While the Big East does not sponsor football, four member schools operate programs in that sport. UConn is in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Villanova, Butler and Georgetown are in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). But basketball remains the cornerstone of the Big East. It is considered one of the Power Five conferences in both men's and women's basketball. Since the 2013 restructuring, UConn men's basketball team has won three national championships while Villanova men have won two national titles. In that same span, UConn's women's team has won five national championships. Big East athletes have earning opportunities through revenue sharing and NIL (name, image and likeness) deals. UConn men's basketball point guard Silas Demary Jr. carries one of the nation's top estimated NIL valuations and UConn players Azzi Fudd and KK Arnold rank among the top women's basketball players in the category.
