This classification is generally utilized by specialized liberal arts colleges, deeply historical religious institutions, or athletic programs currently undergoing the NCAA's rigorous exploratory and provisional membership processes (often transitioning from the USCAA or NAIA). Operating independently in Division III is exceptionally rare and financially demanding, as it eliminates the localized, bus-trip scheduling structure that is the hallmark of the division. Without a conference tournament to secure an automatic bid, Division III independents face an incredibly steep uphill battle to reach the national postseason. Their path to the NCAA Tournament requires an almost flawless regular-season record and scheduling matchups against regionally ranked opponents willing to play non-conference games out of their standard footprint, making their athletic journey one of the most challenging in collegiate sports.
