The Golden Coast Conference (GCC) was established in 2013 as a collegiate athletic conference dedicated exclusively to the sport of water polo. The league was formed to provide a highly competitive platform for West Coast institutions within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The conference began its inaugural women's season in the spring of 2014. A men's division was introduced in the fall of 2016 and competed through the 2022 season before its members transitioned to other leagues.
The GCC quickly asserted itself on the national stage. Since 2016, the women's division champion has earned an automatic bid to the National Collegiate Women's Water Polo Championship. Over the years, the conference has been home to powerhouse programs that consistently rank in the top tiers of the national polls, turning the league's annual tournament into a showcase of elite collegiate water polo.
The conference footprint encompasses dynamic institutions across California. Throughout its history, programs like Loyola Marymount, San Diego State, Pacific, and Fresno State have captured multiple conference crowns and regular-season titles, establishing deep-rooted rivalries in the pool. The GCC continues to adapt and evolve, welcoming new members to maintain its standing as a premier destination for collegiate water polo on the West Coast.
