About

In collegiate sports, "Independents" refers to athletic programs that do not maintain formal membership in a specific sport-sponsored conference. Operating outside of traditional league structures across various divisions (including NCAA, NAIA, NCCAA, and ACCA), these programs build their own custom regular-season schedules, playing a diverse mix of opponents rather than a mandated set of conference rivals.

Because they do not compete in a conference tournament, independent teams cannot earn automatic qualification bids to national postseasons. Instead, their postseason hopes rely entirely on earning at-large selections based on their overall season record and strength of schedule. While this status offers institutions unparalleled scheduling flexibility and independence, it also requires programs to navigate the challenges of athletic scheduling and postseason qualification entirely on their own merit.
