The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, known as the KCAC, is an NAIA conference headquartered in Wichita, Kansas, and one of the oldest college athletic conferences in the United States. Its member schools are concentrated in Kansas, with additional members in neighboring states across the Great Plains.
The conference took shape in 1902 as the Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with 18 charter members. That founding group included Baker, Bethany, Bethel, Kansas Wesleyan, McPherson, Ottawa, Friends, Washburn and St. Mary's, along with the schools that became Emporia State, Fort Hays State, Pittsburg State and Kansas State. The league was renamed the Kansas College Athletic Conference in 1928 and later adopted the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference name.
Kansas college athletics has a remarkable history. In November 1890, Baker defeated Kansas University 22 to 9 at Baldwin in a game often described as the start of recorded college football in the state. On Christmas Day in 1905, Washburn and Fairmount played an experimental game to test new rules, and historians credit that contest with one of the first forward passes in football history.
KCAC schools compete in football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, wrestling, lacrosse, golf, tennis, cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The KCAC carries a century of tradition.
