The Metro Conference was founded in 1980 as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference by six charter members: Army, Fairfield, Fordham, Iona, Manhattan and Saint Peter's. Competition began the following fall in men's cross country and men's soccer, and on January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first conference men's basketball game. The league adopted its current name in 2026. Its members are private institutions across the Northeast, many of them Catholic, bound by a shared commitment to competitive excellence and academic achievement.
Basketball has produced the signature moments. In 2022, Saint Peter's became the first No. 15 seed in NCAA history to reach the Elite Eight, defeating Kentucky, Murray State and Purdue on the way. Marist reached the women's Sweet 16 in 2007, and Quinnipiac followed a decade later, beating Marquette and Miami to get there. Siena won the College Basketball Invitational in 2014, and Saint Peter's claimed the CIT title in 2017.
Distance running has been a conference hallmark. Iona strung together more than thirty consecutive men's cross country championships, and Kate Avery won the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Championship.
The Olympic connection runs through several programs. Iona's Leonard Korir, the school's first NCAA champion, ran the 10,000 meters in Rio and the marathon in Paris for Team USA. Maël Gouyette raced the 1500 meters for France, and Juana Camilion represented Spain in 3x3 basketball. Emma Hayes coached Iona before taking charge of the United States women's national soccer team. Niagara's Chris Begg pitched for Canada.
Rivalries sharpen the calendar. Marist and Siena contest the Battle of I-87, named for the highway between them. Quinnipiac and Fairfield meet in the Merritt Parkway Melee, thirty miles apart in Connecticut.
