11 Schools•Division II•Est. 2013
The Mountain East Conference is the "Appalachian Powerhouse" of NCAA Division II, a high-octane athletic alliance born from a bold vision of regional dominance and geographical efficiency. Headquartered in Bridgeport, West Virginia, the MEC was established in 2013 as a streamlined, hyper-competitive successor to the historic West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC). Defined by an identity of "Elevated Excellence," the league spans the rugged peaks of West Virginia, the urban corridors of Maryland and Pennsylvania, and the industrial heart of Ohio. In the MEC, the "Mountain" isn't just a namesake—it represents a steep competitive climb where programs are built on grit, community loyalty, and a relentless pursuit of national hardware.
The conference’s soul is anchored in its status as a High-Resource Innovation Lab, particularly in Men’s Basketball and Soccer. The MEC is widely considered one of the most dangerous basketball leagues in the nation, characterized by a fast-breaking, "Run-and-Gun" style that produces record-breaking scoring averages. Programs like West Liberty—famed for their relentless "Hilltopper" press—and the University of Charleston have turned the "MEC Tournament" in Wheeling into one of the premier postseason events in Division II. On the soccer pitch, the MEC is a national predator, with the University of Charleston consistently contending for and winning NCAA National Championships, establishing the league as a global destination for elite international talent.
