About

The NCAC was founded in February 1983, when seven schools announced the league at joint news conferences in Cleveland, Columbus and Pittsburgh and began play in 1984. Four decades later the conference spans nine private colleges and universities across Ohio and Indiana and sponsors 23 sports, 11 for men and 12 for women, one of the largest women's slates in Division III.

Swimming built the reputation. Kenyon men have won 29 NCAA team titles and Kenyon women 24, runs of dominance with few equals at any level of college sport. Denison men have added seven of their own, including the 2026 crown, and the Big Red women have won twice. In all, NCAC schools have collected 77 national team championships since the first playing season.

The rest of the trophy case runs wide. Denison won national titles in baseball and women's basketball in 2026, the program's first in both. Ohio Wesleyan owns crowns in men's basketball, men's soccer and women's soccer. Wittenberg has won in volleyball and men's golf, DePauw in women's basketball and Allegheny in football.

Academics carry equal weight. Eight member institutions and three affiliates hold Phi Beta Kappa chapters, a distinction shared by fewer than 300 of the more than 3,000 four year colleges in the country, and North Coast athletes earned 239 All America or Academic All America certificates in a single recent year. The presidents of the member schools govern the league themselves.

Rivalries give the calendar its shape. Wabash and DePauw meet for the Monon Bell, a series that dates to 1890 and draws national television and more than 60 alumni watch parties. Oberlin and Kenyon have played since 1892. Wittenberg and Denison have spent decades trading places at the top of the standings.
