Former Washington State men's basketball coach George Raveling gave the Pac-12 conference an unofficial nickname years ago. He called it "the conference of champions". Raveling had a valid point. Pac-12 schools have won more than 500 team NCAA champions, far more than any other conference. A conference that previously has been known as the Athletic Association of Western Universities, Big Five, Big Six, Pacific-8 and Pacific-10, the Pac-12 picked up its current name in 2011. But "the conference of champions" is now going through its biggest transformation ever. On Aug. 2, 2024, 10 of the 12 member schools left the Pac-12 for other conferences. That left the Pac-12 with only two members (Oregon State and Washington State) for the 2025-26 academic year. The conference currently is sponsoring only six sports - baseball, football, men's and women's track and field, women's gymnastics and men's wrestling. Oregon State's and Washington's teams in those six sports currently are functioning as independents with scheduling agreements with other conferences. But all that soon will change dramatically and the Pac-12 will have a new look. Starting in the 2026-27 academic year, Oregon State and Washington will be joined by Boise State, Cal State-Fresno, Colorado State, Gonzaga, San Diego State, Texas State and Utah State to make up a nine-school conference. Although Gonzaga is a non-football school, the eight other members give the Pac-12 the NCAA-minimum eight football schools required to preserve Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) status. In the 2026-27 academic year, the Pac-12 will have three single-sport affiliates - Northern Illinois in men's wrestling, Southern Utah in women's gymnastics and Dallas Baptist in baseball. The Pac-12 also is one of the founding members of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, a conference organized for competition in non-revenue Olympic sports. When the new-look Pac-12 begins play in the 2026-27 academic year, Colorado State's Canvas Stadium will have the largest seating capacity (40,727) of the conference's football venues. Cal State-Fresno will have the conference's biggest basketball venue, the 15,544-seat Save Mart Center.
