The Pioneer Football League (PFL) is the nation's only non-scholarship, football-only NCAA Football Championship Subdivision conference, founded in 1991 and entering its 33rd season of play. The league was created as a direct result of an NCAA rule change passed in January 1991 requiring Division I schools to sponsor all sports at the Division I level, and played its first season in 1993 with charter members Butler University, the University of Dayton, Drake University, the University of Evansville, and Valparaiso University. The PFL is a truly national conference with member institutions stretching from New York and Florida in the east to California in the west, currently fielding 11 teams: Butler, Davidson, Dayton, Drake, Marist, Morehead State, Presbyterian, San Diego, Stetson, St. Thomas, and Valparaiso. Unlike most FCS conferences, PFL member institutions choose not to award athletic scholarships to football players, making the league unique in Division I. The conference gained an automatic bid to the FCS playoffs in 2013 when the championship expanded to 24 teams, with San Diego winning the PFL's first playoff games in 2016 and 2017. Dayton and San Diego lead the conference with 12 titles each, followed by Drake with nine. Drake claimed three consecutive PFL championships from 2023 through 2025. The conference is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, in the same complex as the Missouri Valley Conference and Missouri Valley Football Conference.
