The Southland Conference was founded in 1963 and celebrates a defining regional identity — the 'Gas Tank League' — as all 12 members lie within driving distance of Louisiana and Texas. Those 12 are Houston Christian, Incarnate Word, Lamar, McNeese State, New Orleans, Nicholls State, Northwestern State, Southeastern Louisiana, Stephen F. Austin, East Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UT Rio Grande Valley. Commissioner Chris Grant took over in 2022 and led a full rebrand in 2023. Average member tenure is 25 years, reflecting rare mid-major stability. Football is the conference's most decorated sport. The Southland has hosted the FCS national championship at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas since 2011, with the arrangement reaffirmed through at least 2025. The conference has appeared in nine title games, won six national championships and accumulated 70 all-time playoff wins. Five Southland players have won the Walter Payton Award since 2010, including UIW's Lindsey Scott Jr. in 2022, who broke FCS records with 71 total touchdowns and 60 passing scores in a season. Basketball carries a decorated legacy. The Southland has generated 18 NCAA Tournament wins with Hall of Fame alumni Karl Malone and Joe Dumars. Northwestern State upset No. 3 Iowa as a 14-seed in 2006. Stephen F. Austin went 32-3 in 2013-14 and knocked off VCU as a 12-seed. McNeese entered the 2024-25 tournament as a 12-seed, its highest seed in a decade. The conference expanded its support infrastructure in recent years, partnering with Thrive Global for mental health resources in 2022 and launching an NIL Marketplace through INFLCR in fall 2023. Twenty-eight alumni have reached MLB, including 2024 All-Star David Fry of Cleveland. Two Southland players were selected in the 2024 NFL Draft: Jalyx Hunt (HCU, third round, Eagles) and Levi Drake Rodriguez (East Texas A&M, seventh round, Vikings).
