The Sunshine State Conference (SSC) is an NCAA Division II conference founded in 1975, featuring 11 member institutions all located in the state of Florida. The conference began as a single-sport men's basketball league, with six charter members meeting at Florida Southern College in Lakeland on March 2, 1975, and has grown into what is widely regarded as the Division II "Conference of National Champions." SSC institutions have won 136 NCAA Division II national team championships across baseball, softball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer, men's basketball, men's and women's lacrosse, women's rowing, men's and women's tennis, women's volleyball, and men's and women's swimming. In 2024-25, SSC programs claimed a conference-record eight national championships in a single year, making the SSC the first Division II conference in 30 years to accomplish that milestone. The conference sponsors 21 sports — nine for men and 12 for women — and has led all 24 Division II conferences in the NCAA Academic Success Rate for 18 consecutive years, setting a Division II record with a 90% ASR following the 2024-25 academic year. Florida Southern College has been the conference's most decorated program with 30 national championships, followed by Barry University with 29 and the University of Tampa with 25. The Mayors' Cup, presented annually since 1987, recognizes the SSC's all-sports champion, with Florida Southern leading all programs in men's titles and Tampa dominating the women's side in recent years. The conference is headquartered in Orlando and is led by Commissioner Chris Graham, who began his tenure on July 1, 2025.
