The Hampton Pirates and Lady Pirates proudly represent Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, embodying a tradition of excellence, resilience, and championship pride. Competing in NCAA Division I as members of the Coastal Athletic Association, the Pirates field 15 varsity sports and have secured three national championships, including the women’s basketball 1988 NCAA Division II national title and back-to-back NCAA Division II men’s tennis championships in 1976 and 1989. Mascot Petey the Pirate rallies a spirited community committed to academic achievement and athletic success. Hampton’s programs have consistently developed elite athletes competing professionally and on global stages. Facilities such as Armstrong Stadium and the Hampton Convocation Center provide vibrant venues where student-athletes train and excel. The Pirates boast Olympians and international competitors in track and field, tennis, sailing, and more, underscoring their commitment to fostering top-level talent.
