The CAA began as a basketball league, added championships in other sports as the Colonial Athletic Association in 1985, and took the name Coastal Athletic Association on July 20, 2023, reflecting a membership that had grown along the seaboard. Headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, it competes in NCAA Division I and sponsors more than twenty championship sports across a footprint running from Boston to Charleston. Among its members are the College of William and Mary, chartered in 1693, and the College of Charleston, founded in 1770.
Football operates as a legally separate conference under the same administration, competing in the Championship Subdivision. Its lineage is the oldest thing the league owns. The Code of the Yankee Conference took effect on December 3, 1946, binding six New England land grant colleges, with play beginning the following autumn. Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island have been in that league without interruption ever since.
The competitive record spans the full breadth of the sponsorship. William and Mary's men won twenty consecutive cross country championships from 2000 through 2019. Towson reached the men's lacrosse Final Four in 2017. Charleston won thirty one games in 2022 and 2023 and became the first CAA program ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 in more than three decades. Stony Brook reached the women's lacrosse quarterfinals in 2026.
The classroom carries equal weight. The CAA Academic Alliance, created in 2002 by the league's presidents, extends the partnership between member institutions beyond athletics into leadership development, shared academic resources and student success.
Proximity does the rest. Hofstra and Stony Brook meet as Long Island neighbors, a series that has run for decades and now decides conference standing as well as local bragging rights.
