The NEC (formerly the Northeast Conference) is an NCAA Division I collegiate athletic conference entering its 45th year of competition in 2025-26, with member institutions located across six states in the northeastern United States and the Midwest. The conference was established in 1981 as the ECAC Metro Conference, originally created as a single-sport men's basketball league for unaffiliated schools on the Eastern seaboard before expanding to become a 25-sport conference. The NEC officially rebranded from the Northeast Conference to simply the NEC in October 2025. The conference currently features 10 full members, with charter members Fairleigh Dickinson, LIU, Saint Francis University, and Wagner still active in the league. The NEC sponsors championships in baseball, men's and women's basketball, women's bowling, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, football, men's and women's golf, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, and men's and women's volleyball. The inclusion of Chicago State expanded the NEC's geographic footprint to encompass three of the nation's top-10 media markets — New York City, Chicago, and Boston. The conference is headquartered in Bridgewater, New Jersey and is led by Commissioner Noreen Morris, now in her 16th year of tenure. The NEC launched its own streaming platform, NEC Front Row, in 2012, making most events available live and on demand free of charge.
