The NEC was founded in 1981 and is based in Bridgewater, New Jersey. It launched as the ECAC Metro Conference, took the Northeast Conference name in 1988, and shortened that to the NEC in 2025.
Basketball came first. The founders wanted a competitive Division I men's basketball league for unaffiliated schools along the Eastern seaboard, and for four years the conference sponsored nothing else. More sports arrived in 1985. The mission never moved: give student athletes the chance to reach their fullest potential in the classroom, in competition and in the community.
Football arrived in 1996 and competes in the Football Championship Subdivision. Charter members FDU, LIU and Wagner still anchor the membership, a thread running straight back to the first season.
Rivalries give the schedule its teeth. Duquesne and Robert Morris sit roughly 20 minutes apart in the Pittsburgh area, and their meeting at Rooney Field came back onto the calendar when Robert Morris rejoined the league. Coaches on both sidelines pushed to keep that game alive even during the years the schools sat in different conferences. Le Moyne and Stonehill have played since the early 1960s, carried the series through their years as NE10 opponents, and brought it with them into the NEC.
The hardware runs deep. The Commissioner's Cup, named for Brenda Weare, goes to the program that performs best across every NEC sponsored sport. The NEC Hall of Fame opened in 2010 during the league's 30th anniversary, with first commissioner Chris Monasch and coach Jim Phelan headlining the class.
