Founded in 1962 with six charter members — Arizona, Arizona State, BYU, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming — the Western Athletic Conference has undergone dramatic transformations over its six-decade history. BYU claimed a national football championship under the WAC banner in 1984. Today the WAC operates as a non-football conference with seven full members headquartered in Arlington, Texas, while football-playing schools compete in the United Athletic Conference. The conference has produced 28 NCAA Tournament appearances in men's basketball and sponsors 17 sports across its membership.
