Team Profile
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley reflects the vibrant athletic tradition and cultural richness of South Texas. The Vaqueros claimed the 1963 NAIA men’s basketball championship and dominated tennis with five consecutive NAIA national titles in the 1960s under coach Don Russell. Their baseball team made history with a 1971 College World Series semifinal run. Facilities like the UTRGV Fieldhouse accommodate 16 varsity sports, including a forthcoming football program debuting in 2025 at Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium. Rooted in borderland determination and cultural pride, UTRGV continues to build championship momentum. The program honors trailblazers like Coach Al Ogletree and aims to foster Olympians and professional athletes, representing the Rio Grande Valley with fierce Vaquero courage and community spirit within the Southland Conference.
