The Big 12 was formed in February 1994, when all eight members of the Big Eight joined with four Texas schools from the collapsing Southwest Conference. Play began in the fall of 1996 with a Texas Tech at Kansas State football game. The league now spans sixteen universities across ten states, from Florida to Arizona, and sponsors 25 sports.
