The Big 12 was formed in February 1994, when all eight members of the Big Eight joined with four Texas schools from the collapsing Southwest Conference. Play began in the fall of 1996 with a Texas Tech at Kansas State football game. The league now spans sixteen universities across ten states, from Florida to Arizona, and sponsors 25 sports.
Basketball is the calling card. The Big 12 routinely earns more NCAA Tournament bids per school than any conference in the country, and the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City has become a March institution. Kansas, Baylor, and Arizona have all cut down nets as members, and Houston, Kansas State, Iowa State, and Oklahoma State have all reached the Final Four.
The trophy case runs far wider. Member institutions have combined for roughly 280 team national championships across all sports. Oklahoma State leads the way with 57, built on wrestling, golf, and cross country. Utah owns skiing and gymnastics dynasties, Colorado has distance running, Arizona State has swimming, West Virginia has rifle, and TCU has beach volleyball and tennis.
The Olympic pipeline is extraordinary. Big 12 athletes have made hundreds of appearances representing more than sixty countries and have brought home well over 150 medals in swimming, track and field, wrestling, gymnastics, basketball, and soccer.
Rivalries stretch across the map. Kansas and Kansas State play the Sunflower Showdown for the Governor's Cup. BYU and Utah contest the Holy War and the Beehive Boot. Baylor and TCU meet in the Revivalry, a series dating to 1899. Arizona and Arizona State battle for the Territorial Cup, the oldest trophy in college football. Iowa State and Kansas State have played Farmageddon more than a hundred straight years, and Texas Tech, Houston, Cincinnati, and West Virginia bring their own regional grudges.
